FDI PRESIDENT ACTIVITIES
For the development of oral health in a country, there are three pillars:
- The authority - who has the power and the budget
- The population - who needs to be informed and educated
- The dental profession - who has to do it.
Without any one of these three pillars it is impossible to introduce oral health in a country. This was clear during my visits with the authorities.
In Luanda, Angola, the first International Congress of Portuguese-speaking Countries, allowed the dentists of Angola to meet each other and began organising the profession. Congratulations to the local organising committee and the Ordem dos Medicos-Dentistas of Portugal who organised this congress and the meeting with the Minister of Health, Dr Anastásio A. R. Sicato.
In South Africa, during the successful congress of our member association South Africa Dental Association (South African Dental Association) in Sun City, our South African colleagues, through a huge amount of work, obtained appointments with the Minister of Health, Dr Tsabalala-Msimang, and the Director of Workforce Planning. In the presence of the Vice–President of the SADA, Dr Lethoko Tsiu, and the Executive Director, Dr Neil Campbell, constructive and friendly discussions took place with the Minister. The Minister showed great interest for the World Health Organization (WHO) resolution and appointments were made for a roundtable discussion with the dental profession for implementation of the resolution.
In addition to the meetings, the FDI President, Dr Michèle Aerden also visited the launch of a prevention programme at a school in a rural area near Rustingberg.
