FDI World Dental Congress 2014
Message from our President (21 July 2014)
Meeting FDI friends and partners
Dr Tin Chun Wong, FDI President
This past four weeks have provided some very enriching encounters, sometimes among old friends, sometimes with new acquaintances. I put my recent participation in the General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in Cape Town as the former category: IADR is one of FDI’s closest friends and I personally have many personal friends among its members.

The collaboration between our two organizations over recent years has achieved extremely positive results, most recently within the context of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, where we were among the parties to successfully advocate a phase-down rather than phase-out of dental amalgam. Prior to that, we had worked together to ensure that oral health was included in the United Nations Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases.
In my address to the opening session on 25 June, I informed the IADR board and General Session participants of FDI’s current priorities, notably current priority projects in the fields of oral health data and collaborative practice, as well as the extraordinary success of the 2014 World Oral Health Day, whose message reached an estimated 10 million people worldwide.
It was also my pleasure to be able to inform them that oral health within the World Health Organization (WHO) is now secure in the person of newly-appointed section chief, Prof Hiroshi Ogawa, who was, I reminded IADR members, co-author with Poul-Erik Peterson, of the 2005 paper ‘The global burden of oral diseases and risks to oral health’, published in the WHO Bulletin.
