Right Fact… Wrong Conclusions
Adam Lloyd, USA

- Learn a new perspective on the published research and articles that you have to rely on for practice philosophy

The JOE recently published a meta-analysis of endodontic literature concerning success or failure of endodontic treatment as related to apical extent of filling material. At best, the authors forgot the difference between anatomical and radiographic apex. At worst, this was a prime example of a quote by Benjamin Disraeli: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics”.

Piezoelectrical Surgical Procedures
Eric Normand, France
Jean-Marc Chamoux, France

How to handle difficult bone surgery procedures easier and safer, with less side effects :

  • Learn the advantages and indications of piezo-electric surgery
  • Learn how to perform the following with a piezo-electric surgical device : crown lengthening, bone block and chip harvesting and grafting, sinus lift (lateral window and Schneiderian membrane management), bone splitting, extraction

Ultrasonic devices have long been known in dentistry, but only recently have they been available for bone surgery, thanks to applied research and development. This session will discuss the new procedures that the latest generation of electronics can support, ie. minimally-invasive bone surgery, the selective cutting effect of the ultrasonic micro-instruments whereby the soft tissue is preserved, extractions, bone grafting, bone collecting, sinus procedures ... all of which are safer with the new instrumentation, but demand specific education and training. The participants will have the opportunity to try these new devices on models and animal bone for all the above indications.

These speakers' attendance have been made possible by Satelec – Acteon Group.

Implants as Anchorage in Orthodontics
Microimplant Anchorage for Various Tooth Movement
Hee-Moon Kyung, Korea

At the end of this course, the participant will:

  • Understand the variety of microimplants methods in orthodontic therapy
  • Become aware of the different requirements according to site selection
  • Become familiar with the surgical placement

Control of anchorage is one of the most important aspects of orthodontics. Many traditional treatment protocols have incorporated both extraoral (headgear) and intraoral (intermaxillary elastics) approaches to maintain anchorage. Unfortunately, patient’s compliance is often considered as the “Achilles heel” of controlled tooth movement. In an effort to maximize anchorage while reducing the dependence on patient’s cooperation, Dr. Kyung and his colleagues have developed a system of microimplants specifically for the orthodontic patient. Topics to be covered in the course include the selection of proper microimplant size and shape, sites of microimplant placement, avoidance of complications and many case reports.

New Technologies in Orthodontic Therapy
Maximizing the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Invisalign for Minor to Moderate Malocclusions in Dentists Experienced in Orthodontic Treatment

Robert Boyd, USA

  • To understand the benefits of comprehensive treatment with the Invisalign appliance for mild to moderate types of orthodontic problems
  • Use of Invisalign software as a therapeutic diagnosis tool, new techniques for treatment of moderate crowding which involve less interproximal reduction
  • Use of interarch elastics for class II and III corrections

This course is designed for dentists that are currently doing orthodontic treatment in their practices, those who may already be treating patients with the Invisalign appliance or those seeking to expand the scope of difficulty of the orthodontic patients they currently treat in a more effective and efficient manner. Explanations of how the Invisalign software is used to treatment plan and the detailed use of the appliance for minor to moderate malocclusions will be given with emphasis on adult patients with multidisciplinary needs. Numerous fully documented Invisalign cases will be shown by Dr Boyd to explain the treatment principles presented.
