Noncommunicable disease (NCDs) now account for 60% of global deaths, killing 35 million people each year, 80% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. The United Nations has announced a High Level Summit on NCDs that will take in New York in September 2011. Dental carries is the most common NCDs and there are important links between oral health and other NCDs such are cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Oral cancer is also important NCDs. The FDI has been actively tracking NCDs at the World Health Organization and made interventions with our sister organizations thought The World Health Professions Alliance. We will continue to be active in the NCD area and encourage all oral health professionals to watch this important event.
