New code of practice
adopted during WHO informal meeting of health professionals
The Tobacco Free Initiative organised an informal meeting with representatives
of international health professional organizations (28-30 January
2004, Geneva). The purpose of this meeting was to explore with various
international health professional organizations (medical doctors,
as well as nurses, pharmacists, dentists, etc.) potential ways in
which they could contribute to tobacco control and public health goals.
Their potential role in the signature, ratification and implementation
of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) was
also addressed.
As a result of the meeting, a "code of practice" for health
professional organization was developed by the participants. This
outlines the potential role of health professional organizations in
treatment of tobacco dependence and smoking cessation and gives guidance
on organizational changes and activities promoting a smoke-free profession.
Dr Habib Benzian represented the FDI at this meeting and gave a presentation
on the role of dentists worldwide in tobacco control. Among other
organization represented were the World Medical Association, the International
Council of Nurses, the World Federation of Pharmacists and many others.
The General Assembly of the FDI adopted the Code of Practice
as official FDI Policy Statement.
