Oral cavity and sexually transmitted diseases

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major global health concern, and dentists are on the frontlines of detection. The new FDI advice sheet equips dental professionals with essential knowledge to identify oral manifestations of STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, HPV, and HIV. Many of these infections present early signs in the mouth, ranging from chancres and oral candidiasis to warts and ulcers, making routine dental check-ups an important step in early diagnosis.

By recognizing symptoms, dentists can provide preventive counselling, refer patients for timely treatment, and help reduce stigma around discussing sexual health. The resource also highlights prevention strategies, from patient education on safe practices to vaccination and collaborative care. With clear guidance, dentists can confidently address this sensitive topic, improving both individual outcomes and public health.

Halitosis (bad breath)

Halitosis, affecting up to 65% of the global population, is more than a social inconvenience, it can signal underlying oral or systemic health issues. The new FDI advice sheet empowers dental teams to diagnose, manage, and counsel patients on this widespread condition. Most cases (85–90%) originate in the mouth due to factors such as periodontal disease, tongue coating, or poor oral hygiene, but systemic conditions like gastrointestinal or respiratory disorders can also play a role.

The resource outlines causes, diagnostic methods (including gas chromatography and organoleptic testing), and treatment pathways. From encouraging daily tongue cleaning and hydration to addressing persistent cases with probiotics, antimicrobial rinses, or referrals to specialists, the advice sheet provides practical, evidence-based solutions. Dentists are encouraged to treat halitosis holistically, recognizing its psychological burden and impact on self-esteem. By doing so, dental teams can help restore both oral health and confidence.
