FDI releases new video, infographics, and white paper to advance oral health education through the Whole Mouth Health programme

Launched in 2019, the Whole Mouth Health (WMH) project explores what oral health means to people in their daily lives and how oral health education can better reflect their experiences. Unlike traditional approaches, WMH uses a co-design methodology to work directly with diverse communities to capture their lived realities, beliefs, and barriers.

Through workshops conducted across four countries, the project looked at how community members perceive a “healthy mouth,” considering aspects such as comfort, functionality, aesthetics, and overall well-being.

Introducing the new resources

FDI’s new resources includes three key materials that build on years of research and community engagement:

The video introduces the WMH project and illustrates how the co-design approach allows community voices to directly shape oral health education. It highlights the project’s goals, methodology, and key insights drawn from engagement with global communities.

  2. Key findings from co-design workshops, showcasing how individuals in different communities define oral health.

These visuals provide a clear, global perspective that inform its people-centred approach.

White Paper - Co-design Oral Health

White Paper: Insights and Recommendations

The accompanying white paper provides evidence for the co-design process and outlines recommendations for improving oral health literacy, behaviour changes, and oral prevention. It serves as a resource for policy makers, oral health and non-oral health professionals seeking for effective interventions.

Oral health literacy and behaviour change remain major global challenges. The WMH programme aims to innovate educational approaches by incorporating real experiences of communities. These new assets mark an important milestone in the programme’s ongoing efforts to advance person-centred oral health globally.
